Package design for and The Silence of Being: The Music of Arvo Pärt released by Naxos Classical Music. Second in a 3 part series of special edition box sets, each design features original photography and blue pearl foil embossing. Pårt’s music has always struck me as utterly solemn, full of wide open pauses letting each note ring through until the next sounds. For this reason, I chose a lighter color palate than the previous Philip Glass edition. I wanted the visual language to evoke a feeling of stillness – perhaps even a zen-like quality. I experimented with photographing frozen water to capture motion that had been stopped but found I could create a more subtle and enigmatic quality by photographing grayed water between two sheets of acetate. The result exhibited qualities of a slow moving river – quite appropriate for the Pärt’s slow, paced melodies.
